The Blaauwklippen Shiraz 2020 is a sophisticated expression of Shiraz from the renowned Stellenbosch appellation, known for producing some of the finest red wines in South Africa. This wine is crafted from meticulously selected grapes, reflecting the unique terroir and expert winemaking practices at Blaauwklippen.

Viticulture:
The grapes for this Shiraz were sourced from two distinct blocks on the Blaauwklippen farm, planted with clones SH22 and SH20. These blocks are situated on high potential soil types—Tukulu and Villafonte—and are cultivated using a 7-wire Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) trellis system with drip irrigation. The varied planting densities, narrow (2.0m x 1.0m) and wider (2.5m x 1.4m), influence the vine’s growth and fruit concentration, contributing to the wine’s complexity. The production levels are kept to about 7 and 10 tons/ha, ensuring high-quality fruit selection.

Winemaking:
The hand-harvested grapes were immediately destemmed upon arrival at the cellar and underwent whole berry fermentation in both French oak casks and stainless-steel tanks. The fermentation process included twice-daily pump-overs to facilitate a gentle extraction of tannins, essential for achieving the wine’s refined structure. The total skin-contact period ranged between 14 to 21 days. After pressing, the wine was matured in 300L French oak barrels for 16 months, utilizing 36% new barrels and 64% second and third fill barrels to balance the oak influence with the inherent fruit flavors of the wine. This maturation strategy enhances the wine’s complexity and depth while preserving its varietal characteristics.
