The Elgin Vintners Cloud Haven Merlot Shiraz 2020 is a distinctive blend that showcases the best of two robust varietals, Merlot and Shiraz, each contributing to a balanced and flavorful wine that embodies the unique terroir of Elgin, a cool region renowned for its distinctive wines.

Terroir & Viticulture:
This wine originates from a cool area 12-20 km from the sea, where the vineyards benefit from the moderating influence of the ocean. Mean temperatures during the ripening stage in February range from 19-20°C. The soils are predominantly ferruginous (iron-rich) gravel atop highly weathered, soft Bokkeveld Group shale. Situated at an altitude of 200-300 meters and surrounded by Table Mountain sandstone mountains reaching heights of 500-1000 meters, the vineyards are well-protected from the strong south-easterly winds that prevail in the summer, contributing to a unique microclimate that is ideal for growing Merlot and Shiraz grapes.

Winemaking Notes:
The Merlot grapes were carefully destemmed and the whole berries underwent fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This process included twice-daily pump-overs to ensure a soft and gentle extraction of fruity flavors and tannins. In contrast, the Shiraz underwent whole bunch fermentation in open-top wooden fermenters, with punch-downs also conducted twice daily to aid in juice extraction and enhance the wine’s aromatic profile. Following fermentation, the wines were pressed and blended post-malolactic fermentation. The final blend was then aged for 6 months in tank, augmented with specially selected oak staves from various French forests, adding subtle complexity and structure.
