Vinification:
The grapes are harvested from southwest-facing vineyards in the Franschhoek valley. The well-drained, decomposed sandstone soils are ideal for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon. The winemaker implements appropriate canopy management to achieve berries with deep color and concentrated fruit flavors. What makes this wine unique is the location of the vineyard next to a row of eucalyptus trees. During summer, the trees absorb water from the surrounding soil and ‘sweat’ through their leaves, producing a mist that lands on the grapes, imparting a distinctive minty taste to the wine. The wine is matured in French oak barrels for 18 months.
Serving Suggestion:
This plush red wine sips beautifully on its own or can be enjoyed with hearty roasts, steaks, or lamb skewers adorned with mushroom and rosemary. It’s perfect for pairing with robust, savory dishes that complement its rich flavor profile.
Ageing Potential:
While it is drinking well already, this wine promises greater integration and intrigue for up to 10 years from vintage.
Overall Impression:
Grande Provence Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautifully balanced and inviting wine with a unique minty character imparted by its vineyard’s proximity to eucalyptus trees. Its rich berry flavors, combined with subtle notes of tobacco and fruitcake, make it a delightful choice for winter evenings by the fire or pairing with hearty, flavorful dishes.
