The bottle that is Koen Roose’s playground – the Sauvignon blend varies per vintage. For the 2018 vintage this is Sauvignon Blanc with 23{bcf8de540b227040393d8320b54c109f6258c693bd3a19b97e98b91a3ba36cb7} Riesling and 7{bcf8de540b227040393d8320b54c109f6258c693bd3a19b97e98b91a3ba36cb7} Sarah Raal Chenin Blanc. Peach, a definite herbal quality plus a slight smoky note. The palate is flavourful with tangy acidity and a savoury finish – a rather curious wine overall.
Pale lemon straw colour with a straight clean nose of white stone fruit. We smell here on-ripe peach, citrus and grapefruit with some almond flavours from the wood with some undertones of river stone and wet hay with a touch of anise. On the palate, the layered complexity of tropical fruit and an earthiness accent… all this packed in a tight nightdress. A nice acidity that is covered with a little drop of sweetness to make the whole structure of the wine more appealing.
The story behind the name: Not part of the Anglo-Boer War, but still a remarkable woman in South-African history. She lived in what is now the Free State and was part of the BaSia people. Still, despite being BaSia and a woman, she managed to rule over the BaTlokwa people with great success. She became a feared military strategist and war general.
